Bootstrap entrepreneurs credit Synovus with staffing success
When Brianna Wilson and her husband started Southern Point Staffing (SPS), they had never run a staffing business before. Theirs is a true bootstrap success story.
Brianna, a former manager for national retail chains like the Gap, says she found her passion hiring the right people and then helping them gain skills to grow into new positions. Her husband, Jason Wilson, who logged 15 years as a union journeyman wireman, understands blue-collar staffing needs. And so SPS was born in Albany, Georgia.
"We take a different approach from other staffing companies," she says. "What we really focus on is our employees — we call them our customers." At the end of the day, it's not about what's coming to us; it's about putting the right people in the right place," she says.
Started in 2013, SPS hit $3.2 million in gross revenue in 2017, and then exploded to $4.7 million in 2018.
Synovus even advised them on bookkeeping best practices early on, Brianna says, bringing them into better compliance with accounting needs.
That difference, in less than two years, Brianna attributes mostly to the support the company received from Synovus. Specifically, a line of credit from Synovus allowed them to cover the few weeks' difference between payroll for the staff they hire and being paid by the companies that are hiring the workers through them.
"If you get a client that needs $50,000 in payroll every week, you have to come up with $50,000 for the next three weeks until the client pays you," she says.
Before 2018, SPS also took out a loan from Synovus to cover the cost of customized software to digitize and organize those piles of kitchen-table resumes as well as track contracts and benefits. Synovus even advised them on bookkeeping best practices early on, Brianna says, bringing them into better compliance with accounting needs.
In 2018, as the business continued to grow, SPS outgrew their office. They searched and found a facility their business could grow into. SPS again turned to Synovus for financing. The company now owns a 5,400-square-foot property, with a mortgage they got through Synovus. They also have all of their business checking and business savings accounts there.
“We're changing lives and building futures together," Brianna says.
