Teil Henley: How Honest Feedback Keeps This Entrepreneur Balanced

While Russell’s achievements are measured publicly — stroke by stroke — Teil’s success often depends on more intangible things, like taste and intuition, which ultimately requires the ability to absorb feedback and perhaps change aesthetics if your clientele is asking for it.

This type of pressure is different from her husband's — which is more immediate and performance-driven. For her, it can be hard to adjust course when vision, heart and soul is deeply embedded in the product, with the option to pivot in order for the business to survive.

"I think one of the most important things that I've learned as a business owner is to ask for honest feedback," says Teil. "Then be prepared to have your feelings hurt. That's what you need."

Since day one, Russell has played an influential role in reinforcing Teil’s confidence and supporting her belief system. And that's been critical for her since soliciting feedback — good or bad — is constant and necessary to her success.

"There's no room for any lack of confidence," she says. "The minute [it] creeps in, it just starts to affect everything — the nerves, and then the momentum."

For her, Russell can be a balance board to help her stay positive and push to the next level.

When it comes to his big golf tournaments where there's constant hype, crowds, cameras and attention, the distractions can be extremely overwhelming and last for days — much different from her world back home.

Says Russell of his PGA TOUR schedule: "There's a ton of pressure, and learning to deal with that pressure is a big part of pro golf. [Teil] juggles her career while being my bedrock of support."

Balance and Reset

Being married to a PGA TOUR player often means stepping in to a world of constant judgment and high-intensity performance; multi-day sprints that can turn a regular family weekend into a public spectacle before receding back into regular days. She has learned how to separate his career from hers.

She looks forward to those regular, almost mundane, days. The return to a quieter home life in Columbus when the family can step back and reset are a welcome respite. The time away can also be crucial. She believes shifting the focus away from herself, her career, for a while can replenish the mind and soul.

"This may be against what a lot of modern-day therapists say about putting yourself first," she says. "But I think it's the opposite: You should put others before yourself in whatever way that looks. Whether you're full of achievements or have nothing on your resume, if you're putting others before [you] that provides true joy for yourself."

Mutual Respect and Honesty

Understanding the differences between each other's realities has a way of fostering honesty and balance — two qualities that garner success and also help a relationship to thrive. The result can be a productive partnership built on constructive contrast versus intense competition.

"If [Teil] has any advice for me because she knows me so well and she feels like I am a little off with my game or approach, I'll always listen to her because she has a lot of experience with what she does," says Russell.

In the end, Teil is much more than a golfer's wife. She's emerged as an artist, an entrepreneur and a partner whose ability to remain grounded is the Henley family's quiet superpower.
