Contactless cards

Frequently asked questions

What is a contactless payment card?

A contactless card enables you to simply tap your card at a checkout terminal to pay, instead of swiping or inserting.

Contactless Visa® cards use short-range wireless technology to securely process payments between a contactless-enabled card and a contactless-enabled checkout terminal.

If you see a Contactless Symbol contactless symbol shown at a merchant, it means they accept contactless payments. You can tap your contactless card at the checkout terminal near the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol , and your payment is sent for authorization.

How do I know if my Synovus Visa® payment card is contactless enabled?

Look for the Contactless Symbol  located on the front of your card. If the symbol is shown on your card, it means your card is capable of contactless payments. If you don’t see the symbol, you can still use your card at your favorite merchants by inserting or swiping it at the check out terminal.

How do I use my card to make a contactless payment?

To make a contactless payment, you should hold your contactless card near the checkout terminal for 1 to 2 seconds. The checkout terminal reads the card best when it is held flat over the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol , not at an angle. Some merchants may require you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Where can I pay with a contactless-enabled card?

You can tap to pay wherever you see the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol at checkout. Millions of merchants around the world accept contactless payments, including fast food restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and more. You can still use it where you would normally use another Visa card, including to make online or by phone purchases.

Can I use my contactless Visa® card even if I don’t see the Contactless Symbol at merchant checkout?

Yes. If you don’t see the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol , you  can still use your contactless card at the checkout terminal by inserting your chip card, or by swiping your card at a magnetic stripe terminal.

Are contactless Visa® cards safe?

Yes. Contactless Visa® cards are safe. Each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that securely protects your payment information, just like with a chip card. Cardholders can’t pay accidentally. Your card must be within 1 to 2 inches of the contactless-enabled checkout terminal for the transaction to occur.

What are the benefits of contactless payments?

Contactless payments are easy. Simply tap your contactless card on the contactless-enabled checkout terminal. They are also fast and convenient to use in places where you need to pay on the go. And, just like transactions made with a chip card, each contactless card transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that protects your payment information. So contactless payments are also secure. You can still do everything you would do with another Visa card, including make purchases in stores, online or by phone; add a tip; withdraw cash at ATMS and more.

Are all Synovus Visa® payment cards available with contactless technology?

The Synovus Visa® Debit, Synovus Visa® Platinum Debit, and Synovus Visa® Business Debit cards are now available with contactless capability. Synovus contactless credit cards will be available at a later date.

When will I receive a new contactless Synovus Visa® debit card?

When your debit card expires or is reported as lost or stolen by the primary cardholder, we will reissue you a new contactless card.

Can I use my contactless Visa® card outside the U.S.?

Yes. Millions of merchants around the world accept contactless payments. You can use your contactless Visa® card where Visa is accepted by tapping it at a contactless-enabled checkout terminal where you see the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol. You can also still use it by inserting the card into a chip terminal or swiping it in a magnetic stripe terminal.
