Alabama teens get keys to unlock a brighter financial future
Amie Stout-Boothe admits she might feel a little intimidated speaking to audiences, but the moment she begins teaching financial education to students at the Magic City Acceptance Academy, all that fades away for her. Located in Homewood, Alabama, the public charter school empowers neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ youth with financial education they can use in their futures. “Education is the key to unlocking potential,” the Synovus compliance and individual analysis analyst says. And she takes that purpose to heart through her volunteerism.
Founded in the fall of 2021, MCAA serves grades six through 12. With 340 students currently enrolled in the school, Stout-Boothe has volunteered since 2023.
In her financial education classes, she strives to make learning feel like a lively conversation rather than a lecture. “I keep it light, humorous and highly informative,” she explains. “We cover topics, such as mortgages, escrow and 401(k)s – things that are part of my daily job and lessons I’ve learned throughout my career.” She also prioritizes creating a space where students feel free to ask questions and engage.
Feedback from students and staff confirms the impact of Stout-Boothe’s approach. “At MCAA, they have a saying, ‘Meet them where they are’,” she says. “That philosophy fosters a learning environment that helps bridge gaps and builds community essential for student growth.”
“As an ally, I’ve found the best way to show support is to show up. It means listening to the voices of the community and educating yourself about their challenges to ensure a safe and inclusive space for everyone.”
After her first session, she received positive feedback from the students eager to learn more about basic banking concepts.
The Birmingham native emphasizes the importance of relationships in her teaching. “As an ally, I’ve found the best way to show support is to show up,” she says. “It means listening to the voices of the community and educating yourself about their challenges to ensure a safe and inclusive space for everyone.”
Steph Munkachy, MCAA’s college and career coach, echoes that sentiment. He has worked with Stout-Boothe on student projects and shares how important her financial education lessons are for the students. “It’s invaluable to have community supporters like Amie,” Munkachy says. “We’ve collaborated on several programs – whether it’s financial education for senior students, job shadowing visits or fundraising. It's great to know that we’re supported and have allies in our community aligned with our work.”
“Together we create a community where every student can thrive and inspire the next generation to take charge of their financial futures,” says Stout-Boothe.
