Empowering dreams through financial planning and adventure
John Clidas understands the power of pushing beyond perceived limits. He’s completed 25 marathons across all seven continents and two full Iron Man competitions. He’s conquered the majestic peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania, Africa) and Mt. Rainier (Washington). He has also earned his pilot's license and certified scuba diver instructor status.
As a senior relationship manager at Synovus Trust, Clidas’ passion for adventure matches his desire to help others build secure financial futures. He believes everyone can achieve their dreams despite the obstacles they face. “Every journey in life – just like estate planning – begins with deciding where you want to go and making a plan for how to get there,” the Fort Lauderdale resident shares.
Diagnosed with asthma early in life, Clidas decided the condition wouldn’t define him. That determination motivated him to pursue athletics - something he admired about his older brother growing up in New York – and to constantly challenge himself.
Clidas recently displayed his competitive spirit at the 2024 Boca Ballroom Battle, an annual event that benefits the George Snow Scholarship Fund. He admits being nervous about dancing in front of an audience. His dance partner, Loreta Kriksciukaityte, regional dance director for the Fred Astaire Dance Studios® of South Florida, can attest to Clidas’ determination.
“Dancing with John was fun! He was incredibly competitive and wanted to get every step right," she recalls with laughter. "Though it was outside his comfort zone, he smiled and stayed positive.” The event raised $1.37 million to support South Florida high school students in achieving their academic goals.
“Every journey in life – just like estate planning – begins with deciding where you want to go and making a plan for how to get there.”
Clidas leans on his expertise, and often his experiences, advising clients on financial decisions and preparing for retirement. One of his favorite sayings is, “The greater the challenge, the greater the success.”
He often shares his tips for navigating life’s challenges:
- Understand the nature of the challenge and plan accordingly.
- Stay in the game. You haven’t failed until you stop trying.
- Respect the power of the debrief. What did you learn?
- Don’t let the uncontrollable deter your goals.
- Recognize the importance of rest and recovery.
