Columbus, GA, January 13, 2011 – Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE - “SNV”), the Columbus, Georgia-based financial services company, today announced the naming of William R. “Billy” Blanchard as the Chief Executive Officer of Columbus Bank and Trust (CB&T), in addition to his current role as President. Blanchard succeeds Stephen A. Melton, who will retire as Synovus Regional CEO and CEO of CB&T after 22 years of service. Melton will continue to serve on the Board of Directors of CB&T.
Blanchard was also promoted to the position of Synovus Regional CEO, overseeing the banking operations of CB&T, CB&T of East Alabama (Phenix City and Opelika), CB&T of Middle Georgia (Warner Robins), and Commercial Bank and Trust (LaGrange, Georgia).

Blanchard’s career with Synovus began in 1995 as a Management Associate with CB&T. During his 15-year banking career, he has worked as a credit analyst and served as Business Development Officer and Commercial Lender in the Corporate Banking Department. He also served as Executive Vice President of Retail Banking for CB&T. In October 2009, he was named President of CB&T. Blanchard’s community involvement includes serving as Chairman of the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee, Chairman of the 2009 Fundraising Campaign for the United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley and Chairman of United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley Board of Directors for 2010. Blanchard is a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Georgia, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. He received Synovus’ William B. Turner Humanitarian Award in 2008.
