Columbus, GA, January 27, 2011 – Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE - “SNV”), the Columbus, Georgia-based financial services company, today announced the selection of James H. Mathis as the Chief Executive Officer and Michael R. Holland as President and COO of Coastal Bank and Trust of Florida and Alabama, a division of Synovus Bank. Joseph R. “Robby” Youd, who has served as Coastal Bank of Florida CEO for the past year, is retiring after 37 years of service to the bank.
“Jim Mathis and Michael Holland are the right team to lead Coastal Bank and Trust at this time,” said R. Dallis “D” Copeland, Jr., Synovus’ Chief Banking Officer. “Not only does Jim have a long, successful banking career built over his 30 years in the industry, he is also returning home to a market he knows well. Michael has demonstrated his strong leadership abilities, guiding Synovus’ de novo entry into the Mobile market. He and his team have grown the bank in number of locations and market share in a short period of time.”
Copeland continued, “Through his long and dedicated career with Coastal Bank and Trust, Robby Youd has served our team and customers well, especially as CEO over the past year. We are grateful for the relationships he has developed and wish him well in his retirement. Mathis most recently served as Executive Vice President and Regional Community Executive with Bank of North Georgia, a division of Synovus Bank. He was also President and CEO of Citizens & Merchants Bank and, prior to that, served as Senior Vice President, Commercial Loan Officer and Executive Vice President for Vanguard Bank and Trust from 1991 to 2000. Mathis is active in the local community and currently serves on the Investment Committee for University of West Georgia’s Foundation and is a Board Member of Carroll Tomorrow, the industrial development arm of the Carroll County, Georgia Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, he served in a leadership role for the United Way of Douglas County Board of Directors. Mathis is a graduate of The University of Alabama.
Holland joined Synovus in 2007 as City President of Coastal Bank and Trust of Alabama. He previously worked for Regions Bank as Executive Vice President, responsible for Commercial, Business and Private Banking divisions in south Alabama. Holland is involved in various community efforts in the Mobile community, including holding an active leadership role on the Senior Bowl Committee and as a member of the advisory board of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1988, Holland graduated from the U.S. Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management, and completed the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University in 2000.
