The first WifeSaver restaurant in Augusta, Georgia, began as a way for George Cunningham to pay family medical bills. Built by the Cunninghams and a family friend in 1965, it stood in the Cunninghams’ front yard on Milledgeville Road. Now, thanks to the hard work by George and his son Chris, along with a helping hand from Synovus, that restaurant with the great name has turned into four destinations for the hungry.
“I chose Synovus because of the people,” says Chris, now president of WifeSaver Inc. “I knew Tat Thompson for a long time and Jody Patton as well, and I knew they would take care of my business.”
With help from Synovus, Chris has been able to expand his restaurant business in a major way. In one instance, a property seller wanted to finance the purchase himself. “The team at Synovus had to think outside the box to make the deal work for me,” Chris says, “and they did.”

For example, he explains, “I’d never used online banking and online bill pay before. My banker sat down with me and showed me how to set it up. It’s been a great tool for my business.”
Today WifeSaver Inc. has four locations: two in Augusta (Washington Road and North Leg) and two more in North Augusta and Evans. Proudly serving “the best fried chicken since 1965” as part of an affordable menu that includes Southern veggies and pecan pie, WifeSaver has a devoted fan base throughout the Greater Augusta area. They also provide catering services, inviting customers to call and find out “just how much macaroni and cheese it takes to make everyone in your group happy.”
Chris is happy about a bigger issue. “Synovus has a group of good bankers,” he says. “They think beyond the norm to help my business grow.”
